Oxley Park Walks - Tamworth

Short walks in Oxley Park are possible if you think you might be interested in becoming a bushwalker. New members are always welcome.

FEBRUARY 2017

Oxley Park Walks - February - Tamworth

There will be walks organized for Monday and Friday in Oxley Park. It is proposed that the walks will begin at about 8am and will be approximately two hours duration. Wet weather road walks will also always be available in the event of inclement weather.

Saturday 11 February 2017 – Full Moon Viewing – Mount Borah

Sunset – Full moon viewing from the top of Mount Borah (near Manilla), weather permitting.

There will be 2 options:-

1. Drive to the base of Mount Borah and walk to the top in time to rest and view sunset-moonrise.

2. Drive to the top for viewing (pikers option).

Sunset will be about 1950 hours, so if you plan to do Option 1 you will need to be at the base by 1830 hours.

BYO picnic dinner, snacks and drinks to consume by moonlight during our viewing (optional).

NB 1: The dirt road up Mt Borah is steep and front wheel drive vehicles may struggle to get up. A rear wheel drive or 4WD vehicle is preferable.

NB 2: Bring a head torch or other form of lighting, insect repellent and a jacket, in case it turns cold.

JANUARY 2017

Oxley Park Walks - January – Tamworth

There will be walks organized for Monday and Friday in Oxley Park. It is proposed that the walks will begin at about 8am and will be approximately two hours duration. Wet weather road walks will also always be available in the event of inclement weather.

Monday 9 – Friday 13 January 2017 – Camping and Bushwalking – Mt Kaputar National Park

(Weather permitting) There are many and varied walks to suit all fitness levels. Two good campgrounds with barbecues, shelter sheds, hot showers and toilets.

Weather can be up to 10°C cooler than Narrabri. If you would like to go or need more information, phone Kerry on 6765 3774 by Saturday 7 January 2017.

October 2016

Weather permitting. Namoi River from Manilla Weir upstream and back. Bring a picnic lunch to be consumed under the River Red Gums beside the river.

Saturday 17 September 2016 – Whispering Pines Bushwalk

This will be an easy to moderate walk taking in great views and looking at many of the wildflowers in bloom. Bring a packed lunch and plenty of water. A gold coin donation to RFS.

Oxley Park Walks - August - Tamworth

No scheduled walks for this month as Rob has other commitments. He will recommence his Oxley Park walks on Monday 29 August. For further info contact Rob on 0428 161 373 the day before.

In the meantime contact Chris on 0425 361 417 if you would like to venture on a walk in the hills on a particular day. I will endeavor to make it possible.

Sunday 7 August – Bushwalk from Hanging Rock to Sheba Dam

Walk from Hanging Rock to Sheba Dam along a 4WD track (5 km) with the option to climb up to the top of the range and onto Sheba Dam (approximately 10 km). Leaving time is 8am and return early-mid-afternoon. You need to take water, hat, sunscreen and jacket as it can be quite cool at this time of year.

Saturday 27 July – Astronomy Club Event

Are you interested in astronomy? Tamworth Regional Astronomy Club is holding a special meeting night at Tamworth High School at 7 pm on Wednesday 27 July 2016 with special guest speaker Dr Stephen Kane who will also be drawing their raffle (1st prize a telescope). Saturday 7 to Sunday 8 May 2016 – Syndicate Ridge Track Dorrigo National Park

This classic walk from the top of the Dorrigo escarpment to Glennifer in the Bellinger Valley includes great scenery and views (weather permitting). The track follows an historic logging tramway.

This walk is for moderately experienced walkers and takes approximately 7 hours. The plan is to drive to Dorrigo the first day & camp overnight. The second day we will walk the track and return home. A brief description of the walk can be found at: National Parks NSW

Monday 9 to Friday 13 May 2016 – Camping and Bushwalking – Coolah Tops NP

Lots of walks, lookouts, cliffs, elevated basalt country with tall eucalypt forests. Good tent sites, bbq’s, shelter shed and dunny at the Barracks camp ground. Bring plenty of water for drinking and washing. Be self-sufficient for all supplies.

Wednesday 18 May 2016 – Musical – Mary Poppins

The Tamworth Musical Society’s production of Mary Poppins at 8 pm.

Thursday 14 to Monday 18 April 2016 – Camping and Bushwalking – Pilliga Pottery

Lots of walks, lookouts, cliffs, broken sandstone country. Several camping sites/alternatives. Take guided bushwalks or do your own thing. If remote camping you will need to be self-sufficient in all supplies. Cafι with drinks and meals nearby. Limited water supplies.

Thursday 28 – Friday 29 April – Camping/Kayaking – Copeton Dam

Camping option may change to the Gwyder River depending on water condition. Information on Copeton Dam can be found at Water NSW and cabins are available for people not keen on camping at Inland Waters

Starts 4:30 pm. It’s a 121 minute duration movie but supposed to be funny. Meet at the cinema 4:15 pm.

Sunday 13 March 2016 – Bushwalk – Boonalla Aboriginal Area

Formerly Kelvin State Forest north of Gunnedah.

An early start is envisaged. Bring plenty of water and a packed lunch. Explore a cave and surrounding rocky ridge. If you would like to go or need more information phone Kerry on 6765 3774 by Friday 11 March 2016.

Sunday 20 March 2016 – Official Opening of the Bushwalking Tracks at Whispering Pines (near Quipolly)

After the opening, morning tea will be served, followed by a short bushwalk around Bob’s Loop (or further for those interested in more exercise).

An early start is envisaged (weather permitting). Bring morning tea and plenty of water, sunscreen, hats etc. We should be able to paddle as far as the river inlet and back along the western shore.

Sunday 28 February 2016 – Bushwalk Oxley Park (weather permitting)

Meet at top of Chelmsford Street (small park) at 0630. Bring plenty of water and some snacks. We will walk to top of Neta’s Knoll and across to McPherson’s Hill (optional) and back via Pete’s Track. 2.5 to 3.0 hours.
